Getting Started at Little Oaks Nursery
Starting a pre-school group is a big step in a child’s life and our aim is to make it an enjoyable experience, as it will have a big influence on their future attitude to school and to learning. Do not worry if your child takes a while to settle in. It is often more upsetting for the parent to leave a distressed child than for the child. It is astonishing how the tears dry up as soon as Mum or Dad has disappeared. If the child does have problems we will talk to you about them and, if necessary, can ring you at home. It is also quite common for a child who has settled very quickly to be reluctant to be parted from their parents after a few weeks. Try not to worry as, in our experience, this phase soon passes. The settling in process is vital to your child’s happiness in the group and it is very much dependent on their own personality as to how long it will take. All children are allotted one member of staff who oversees their progress although, of course, they will do activities with all the staff. This member of staff is called your child’s Key Person. You will be told the name of your child’s Key Person.
The term before your child starts with us we would like to invite you and your child to an open pre-session. This takes place in the summer and is a great opportunity for the children to explore their surroundings and meet their new teachers and friends. It is also an opportunity for parents to speak with the teachers and meet other parents. We will give you a form to complete about your child, which will help the teachers to settle them into our nursery school.
We offer morning, afternoon or full day places for all children. Children under 3 years are recommended to attend at least 2 mornings a week. Children aged 3 years and over are recommended to attend for at least 2 full days. The children bring their lunch box to school and spend the day with us. This is excellent preparation for the following year when they begin reception class where they are expected to attend full time. Nursery School is the first step on the educational ladder, through a well planned curriculum, teachers support each child through his or her development so that they leave us confident and happy and ready for the next step to Primary School.
